Will be held April 7 to 9 the Beekeeping Course Level 1 organized by the City of Myrtle, the Association “Città del Bio” and Gal Nebrodi Plus, as part of the Bio-District Nebrodi.
FAI Sicilian-Italian Beekeepers Federation, has become available with its experts to carry out the course, counting on the collaboration of the company beekeeping “Emanumiele”, the farm Paparoni-Farm “Agricontura” and Bee Breeders Association Siciliana.
The course is aimed primarily at young people, while the consortium of municipalities of Mirto, Frazzanò Longi and offers a 50% discount on the cost of participation of young people residing in their territories.

An adventure between the Nebrodi Mountains and the Aeolian Islands.

The proposed experience is articulated in three days in the territory of the Nebrodi, the mountain range overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, and four days sailing in the Aeolian Islands, an archipelago consisting of seven islands.

Day 1
Portorosa

Transfer from Palermo or Catania to the Port of Portorosa, welcome drink on board and meeting with the crew. Shore excursion to visit Villa Piccolo and its park, which houses the museum, run by the Family Foundation Small Calanovella, opened in 1978. Inside are preserved portion of goods that belonged to the family: works of art, paintings, ceramics , antique weapons, books, prints, documents, and there are the autograph letters of his cousin Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. Along with paintings, there are also photographs: shots that reveal the artistic mastery of Baron Small Calanovella and that can be divided, in turn, in family portraits, rural life fragments, portions of the garden with butterflies and beetles , and those relating to “modernity” advances. Tasting of local products or alternatively Dessert / ice cream or granita of Capo d’Orlando in renowned venues.

Day 2

Nebrodi Park

Shore excursion to visit a portion of Nebrodi Park, very significant and interesting is the “valley of the Fitalia territory”, the “Adventure Park Longi” and the waterfall Catafurco of Galati Mamertino. Travel distance on foot about 1 hour; low difficulty. During the excursion a lunch with typical products of the territory will be served. Reboarding the boat and a free evening to visit the town.

Day 3

Alcara Li Fusi

After breakfast on board, excursion to Alcara Li Fusi and birdwatching activities at the Fortresses of the Crasto to observe the Golden Eagles and the Griffons, a recently reintroduced species of vulture. Visit to “Tana delle idee”, a didactical and enviroment and environment oriented laboratory, then an overview of the area to admire the wooded areas of the Nebrodi Mountains. Lunch in a typical Agriturismo.

Day 4

Salina day 1

After breakfast sailing to Salina admiring the bays and natural arched rock formations with a stop for a swim. Then up Punta Megna for a bit of trekking to visit the romantic paths and breathtaking views of Salina from above. The ascent takes about one hour and at the end a cooking lesson await us. We will learn how to put together a famous salad in Salina, with dried tomatoes and other erbs and ingredients that we will be able to pluck and select ourselves directly from the garden. Our lunch will be the final product of this fun cooking experience. Afterwards we will return to the boat and spend the night in the island. The next day a new fun adventure in Salina will make for an exciting prospect.

Day 5

Salina day 2

After breakfast and a swim we will set for an excursion to the island Santuario, it will be an easy ascent and provide great occasion to catch the local flora and fauna in your viewfinder. Then we will visit the Fenech wineries for a taste of Malvasia and authentic wines produced from local grapes.

Day 6

Stromboli

After breakfast sailing along the northern coast of the island of Panarea for a stop in Strombolicchio and then up to Stromboli and the small islands and reefs of Basiluzzo, Dattilo and Lisca Bianca, where you can swim and relax in unique locations with underwater gaysers. Lunch on board. Then we sail to the island of Stromboli to admire the volcanic eruption of the Sciara del Fuoco and the small village of Ginostra where we will spend the night at anchor. During our time in Stromboli there is the possibility of an optional excursion on the volcano crater summit (918 m. Above sea level) by following, with experienced guides, the “Path of St. Vincent.” The ascent is of about 2 hours, and 30 are provided stops every 30-40 minutes. Before sunset you will arrive at the top to see the crater explosions, a stop on top of the crater for about an hour and then back to base in about an hour and a half as the descent is always quicker way down! Then back to Portorosa for the night.

Day 7

Portorosa

Breackfast on board. Disembarking by 9 AM and transfer back to the airport.

Faro di Capo d’Orlando

The beauty of Capo d’Orlando, unknown to most of the people, can be summarized in a few lines, which stand out beauty and uniqueness of this beautiful village.

It is a simple awakening and an equally simple breakfast but at the same time unique, narrated on first person by the guest of one of our holidays house in Capo d’Orlando: CASA DELLA LAMPARA:

“Its morning, about 8:30, I go out from the house and jump at the bar at the corner to get a good iced coffee and cream “Granita caffè e panna” with a freshly baked croissant; i do not eat it at the bar, I want to enjoy it in what is my terrace for this two weeks of September, in front of me the Tyrrhenian sea calm and oily, the blue sky and the Aeolian Islands, which can be glimpsed barely but i learned to distinguish.

Monday, 27 april h 7: 30 Capo D’Orlando

Randazzo it was almost destroyed by a major eruption in 1981 stopped 2000 meters from the city center after he turned off along the road which is currently the railroad and the Valley. The cold waters of this river that separates the physical chain of Nebrodi from volcanic massif. Some eruptions still defy in the barrier and the beautiful results can be appreciated if you visit some areas of the Valley, Mojo Alcantara and near Castiglione di Sicilia, not so far from Taormina, you can watch from the top of the hill the Ionian Sea.!

After Randazzo i go trought the Etna Nord. The road to Bronte home of the pistachios, dates back to the 1700 at 1100mt and here the south wind, as expected, makes double my effort. Bronte is 950 meters of hight and then descends gradually to the plain of Catania. I take this opportunity to stop at the entrance to the city and go to theCafeteria Luca where i  repay my fatigue with arancini and a good pistachio ice cream with chocolate, covered with pistachio powder!
Following surplus and my anguish became more mentally than phisically!
The road around the Etna between Bronte and Adrano it is in a shameful state of abandonment and the beautiful scenery, the show of almonds, climbing lava, yellow gorse, eruptions blacks cutting the snowfields of the mountain, colors that change with the seasons, must defend itself against the attack of the rubbish dumped along the road for kilometer without any authority dealing with.!

This wind of the South and the milky sky already does not put me in a good mood and i want to go faster to get ahead.

Finally go down to the fertile plain of Catania, where hundreds of thousands of aromas of orange explode this time of year.
The route proposed by the Michelin guide through the plain is interrupted and partially used only by farmers and shepherds and, unfortunatelly, this is exactly where i suffered the first hole followed by a second one. I decided to change shoes and walk, pushing the bike up to the top of the road up to Militello in Val di Catania, 450 mt, where i planned to stop for the night. 145 km are already behind me. I can contact Francesca, the owner of B&B Casa Francesca with an extraordinary kindness and come get more 20km to Militello. The bike has been loaded into the car and soon i arrive at the destination.
Francesca offers me a large room on the second floor of his house in the center of Militello, with a nice bathroom and shower, for only 30 euro. After a long bath with me at a nearby restaurant.

I begin my dinner with Militellesi appetizers, then a wonderful dish of pasta with zucchini, sausage, cherry tomatoes and basil. All washed down with local wine.
Once satisfied the body i allow myself to make bit of attention to the intellectual needs and despite the fatigue of the day, i walk a bit in the beautiful historic Baroque.
I discover here that Militello is one of 8 UNESCO world heritage city rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1693!
Among the other cities I visit in the coming days and that will require a return trip, are: Noto, Modica, Ragusa, Scicli, Palazzolo Acreide, Catania, Caltagirone.

I finished my visit with a small digestive, but now I have overcome the fatigue and sleep is ready to wrap

Baia di San Gregorio – capo d’orlando

Monday, 27 april h 7: 30 Capo D’Orlando

I got up at 5:30 to make refueling of petrol … a huge plate of baked pasta of the day warmed up in a microwave. After stretching myself with my old Legnano blue with me since i was 16. I went in front of the sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea is calm and oily, the whitish sky and the Aeolian Islands, which location i know from an early age glimpsed , like ghosts. Not a leaf moves. The area is hot and humid. This means one thing: Scirocco. The strong wind comes from the South East of Syria, I would rather go with a nice Maestrale wind, but hey, you can not choose always .. !!

I go around the lighthouse of Capo D’Orlando and the rocky coast of to the village of San Gregorio. I was immediately assaulted by the smell of the Mediterranean sea, and then go through a cold aisle that reminds me that a mysterious stream runs just a few meters from papyrus and wild mint.
A small footpath through it and it comes right back to 100 years ago.!
Finally i leave the sea behind me (I will not see more for 250 kilometers) and within the valley green nose. 12 km deep into the valley on a slight slope.
The medieval town of Naso is high on my right, the hills are covered in cork oaks and olive trees, the lower lemon, orange and Mediterranean ubiquitous.!

After the way up towards Sinagra with slopes greater than 10% and Ucria, 750 meters above the sea level. Citrus fruits disappear, the temperature comes down and the old core colors the steep terraced mountains of green young and fresh.

The Hazelnuts has been the golden color of the earth for a long time, feeding the confectionery industry considered the basis of many local leaders but unfortunately accomplice often the bad weather, remain on the branches or the ground, and are harvested from wild boars .. !! It goes on, and on. A huge bird casts its shadow on the asphalt. It is a treasure “The Griffin” reappeared in the mountains in recent years. Its open wings are almost 3 meters! I suffer a bit ‘of this 35 km long climb, but I do not think he expects me crushing me to the ground … !!

I climb 1300 meters to Floresta is slower and quiet after Ucria.
It reaches a level to 1000 meters where we found pastures for cattle, horses and llamas in the Andes …. I will stop here for a moment to take a last look to the north. Both symmetric peaks and perfect island of Salina are clearly visible and appear to float in the air, but it’s nothing compared to the show that you can have here when the sky is blue and the visibility almost unlimited. From here we see the Seven Aeolian Islands mythical in full force and look fly from one to another very easily like a bee on a flower of the field.!

Etna

Finally the road change of inclination and a huge monster appears and soon became the center of the landscape.! The Etna, 3350 meters, 120 km of perimeter, the largest volcano in Europe.! The snow still covers her painted up to 1700-1800 meters, are active lava fountains at this time on the southeast ridge; I leave Floresta, a village famous for its bread, cheese (provolone, ricotta, salt and baking) and go down to Santa Domenica and Randazzo, the black city, built of volcanic stone.!

This cycling trip through Sicily, North and South, a trip that i have for a long time dreamed of and imagined with open eyes before realizing it!
Like most of the Italian immigrants in Northern Europe i am afflicted by nostalgia for my homeland and i’m trying rituals can mitigate them …!

The best way i found was to use my old passion, cycling; the perfect way to immerse yourself body and soul, in this complex and rich and sometimes violent landscape. Pour drops of sweat pedaling up the mountain to who i pay tribute, it allows me to say that yes, I’m back!
But over 300 km in two days with 3-4,000 meters in altitude vertical ask a minimum of training and a lot of motivation.!
Throughout the year I pedal around the city with very heavy bike load with a large bag going and coming back from work is 15 km away. Through Flanders yes, but I do it with the Nebrodi and the Aeolian Islands in my eyes and the smell of orange blossom in the nose.!

On behalf of EISA I am proud to be able to bring the conference to Sicily and most grateful to the University of Catania for its generous support. Sicily is situated at the crossroad between North and South, East and West. Whereas the conference venue, Giardini-Naxos, was a Greek colony for years, we will also be close to the former epicentre of Mediterranean sea-power, Malta, later a British station on the passage to India and everything “East of Suez”. Currently it is often the arrivals of migrants that make Sicily hit the headlines of global news.

The conference is the 9th in a row. In addition to Heidelberg, we have previously been in Paris, Vienna, Canterbury, The Hague, Turin,Stockholm and Warsaw. During the first 20 years under the auspices of the largely autonomous Standing Group on International Relations and since Warsaw under the auspices of EISA. The 9th edition of the conference might prove to be the biggest ever in Europe, a clear indication that International Relations is a thriving discipline that with its own association in place is bound to grow. Hence, the conference will be an excellent opportunity to discuss the genealogies of the discipline as well as the balance between discipline and inter- or trans-disciplinarity. Theme-wise the conference focuses on the classic issue of violence yet (re-)presented with an innovative twist. At the same time, the 60+ sections mirror the amazing diversity and intellectual span of International Studies as it has developed during more than a century.
